Our Mandate

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) is established as the successor to the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) under the Energy Act, 2019 as Kenya's Energy and Petroleum sector regulartory agency with the responsibility for economic and technical regulation of electricity, renewable energy, petroleum and coal. Additionally, the authority is tasked with implementing the Petroleum Act (2019).

The Authority is mandated with, inter-alia,

 

(a) Regulate the generation, importation, exportation, transission, distribution, supply, and use of electrical energy exceptfor licensing of nuclear facilities;

b) Regulate importation, refining, exportation, transportation, storage and sale of petroleum and petroleum products;

c) Regulate, monitor and supervise upstream petroleum operations and relevant petroleum agreements in Kenya;

d) Set, review and approve electricity and petroleum tariffs;

e) Monitor the conditions of conductors' operations and their trade practices in consultation with the relevant agencies;

f) Protect consumer, investor and other stakeholder interests;

g) Work with the relevant authorities to formulate, enforce and review environmental, health, safety and quality standards;

h) Collect and maintain energy and petroleum data; and

i) Ensure that only energy efficient and cost effective appliances and equipment are imported into the country in collaboration with relevant agencies.
